Starlink Router Configuration Guide

This guide will comprehensively walk you through the setup and configuration of a Starlink Wi – Fi router. It covers accessing the router interface, understanding setting functions, establishing a basic Wi – Fi network, and sharing tips to enhance performance.

Note that there are various types of Starlink routers. This guide is generally applicable, but settings may vary slightly among different versions. Here, we’ll take the latest Gen 3 router as an example.

Accessing Starlink Router Settings

First, download the Starlink App on your mobile phone or tablet. It’s the key to accessing router settings as there’s no separate web interface. The app is compatible with both Android and iOS.

  1. Connect to the Starlink Wi – Fi network. If newly set up, it may show as “STARLINK”. Otherwise, log in with the configured password. If you forget the password or the network doesn’t show up, try a factory reset.
  2. Open the App and tap “Settings”, where all router and Wi – Fi network configuration options are located.

How to Configure Your Starlink Router

Starlink routers are designed simply, allowing non – professionals to set up secure Wi – Fi for home use.

Wi – Fi Network Settings

In the “Networks” section, you can see the default Wi – Fi network name “STARLINK”. For security, it’s recommended to change the network name and password.

  • Network Name (SSID): Enter a new, unique name for devices to see when searching for Wi – Fi.
  • Password: Create a strong password with a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  • Split 2.4 / 5Ghz Networks: By default, the router auto – connects devices. Enable this if you want to split the Wi – Fi, which benefits devices only compatible with 2.4Ghz.
  • Hidden Network: Enabling this hides the Wi – Fi name from search lists, but you can still connect by manual input.

After changes, tap “Save”. If you’ve modified the network name or password, reconnect all devices.

Content Filtering

Although without traditional parental controls, you can filter malicious and adult content with these options:

  • Malware: Blocks known malicious content to protect devices.
  • Malware and Adult Content: Besides malware filtering, it also filters adult content.

Content filtering is done at the DNS level. When enabled, the router uses Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS service for automatic filtering.

Reboot Router

You can reboot the router via the App anytime, anywhere. Slide the switch to the right, and it will take a few minutes to restart.

Custom DNS

By default, the router uses Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4). If you have trouble connecting to certain sites or apps, switch to a custom DNS, like Cloudflare (primary 1.1.1.1, backup 8.8.8.8). No need to set it manually if content filtering is enabled as the router switches automatically.

Bypass Mode

Use bypass mode when using a third – party router with Starlink. When enabled, the Starlink Wi – Fi router is disabled, no longer broadcasting signals or assigning IPs. To turn it off, perform a factory reset. Refer to the dedicated tutorial for detailed steps.

Factory Reset

You can restore the router to default settings, clearing the Wi – Fi name, password, and other custom settings. It’s useful when forgetting the password or turning off bypass mode. You can also reset without the App. Check the relevant article for how – to.

Starlink Router Lacks Advanced Options

The router in the Starlink kit only offers basic network functions. For the following advanced features, you need to buy a third – party router:

  • Port Forwarding: Open specific ports for certain apps or services.
  • Parental Controls: Manage and restrict users’ internet access, especially for children.
  • Guest Networks: Create a separate Wi – Fi for guests to secure the main network.
  • MAC Filtering: Control device connections by MAC addresses.
  • DHCP/IP Range Settings: Control the IP addresses assigned to devices.

If you need these features, refer to the list of the best third – party routers for Starlink.
