Starlink Roam’s Stunning Update: New Features & Pricing Adjustment

Starlink’s mobile service packages have been overhauled. Name, features, and pricing have changed significantly. The news was emailed to existing Roam users and is on the updated official Roam service page. New features are effective immediately, and new prices start on October 10th.

Roam is a subscription – based service for mobile scenarios. It offers high – speed, low – latency satellite internet to travelers and digital nomads globally. Before, there were three packages: Mobile – Regional, Mobile – Global, and Mini Roam, with distinct features, prices, and scopes.

Now, Starlink has optimized and combined the Roam service, launching two new packages: “Roam – 50GB” and “Roam Unlimited”. They have the same functions but differ in monthly fees and data allowances. If you have an old – version Roam package, the system will auto – switch you to a new one.

“Roam – 50GB” Package

Priced at $50/month, like the old Mini Roam, but without device limits. It gives 50GB data monthly. Extra data costs $1/GB if you exceed the limit.

Old Mini Roam users will be switched automatically. You can enjoy new features:

  • Global Coverage: Use in approved countries for up to 2 months each time.
  • Coastal Coverage: Works in coastal waters within 12 miles offshore.
  • In – motion Use: Stable connection at speeds up to 100 mph (160 kph).

Global coverage is a big plus. Previously, international travel required the $400 – per – month Mobile – Global package. Now, “Roam – 50GB” at $50/month suffices. The 2 – month limit will be discussed later.

“Roam Unlimited” Package

This package costs $165/month. It combines the best of the old Mobile – Regional and Mobile – Global. If you had the $150 – per – month Mobile – Regional, you’ll be upgraded.

Compared to “Roam – 50GB”, its main advantage is unlimited data. Global, coastal, and in – motion use are now standard for all Roam packages. So, former Mobile – Regional users can now use the service while moving and traveling internationally.

Global & Coastal Coverage Rules

All Roam packages support international travel. You can use the service in approved countries for 2 months each time. Exceed this, and you need to go to another country or return to reset the time.

Previously, international use meant the $400 – per – month Mobile – Global. Now, it can cost as little as $50/month.

Both packages cover coastal waters within 12 nautical miles. There’s also a 2 – month limit. Keep moving or return to ensure normal service.

In – motion Use Upgrade

New Roam packages add in – motion data use. Before, only Mini Roam (for Starlink Mini dish) and expensive Mobile Priority ($250/month – starting) supported this. Now, both new packages do. “Roam Unlimited” users can enjoy unlimited data while moving.

Flexible Service Suspension

Both new packages support service suspension. You can use until the end of the billing cycle. When resuming, the system charges a prorated monthly fee based on the remaining days.

Mobile Priority Data Adjustment

Sadly, Mobile Priority data service is no longer available for Roam packages. Before, users could buy it at $2/GB via the Starlink app. This is a blow to the maritime community. Commercial users can still choose the $250 – per – month Mobile Priority, but it’s too costly for recreational boat owners.

Price Adjustment Analysis

The “Roam – 50GB” price stays at $50/month. “Roam Unlimited” is $15 more than the old Mobile – Regional. New users see $165 for “Roam Unlimited” on the website. Some existing users will pay $165 from October 10th. But it’s unclear if all users will adopt the new rate. Updates will be provided.

Summary & Outlook

For $150 – per – month Mobile – Regional users, it may seem like a price hike. But considering Starlink’s function integration, it could be beneficial.

For example, RV travelers may not need unlimited data. “Roam – 50GB” offers more choices. If your monthly data use is less than 165GB, it’s cost – effective. For international travelers, it’s good news as prices have dropped.

Overall, the adjustment simplifies Roam to two data – level packages: 50GB and unlimited. It’s like Starlink’s other priority packages. Users can choose according to their needs, improving service convenience and transparency.
